How image to video works

Image to video, sometimes called photo animation, uses your picture as the first frame of a new video. The AI studies the scene, works out what could move, such as hair, water, clouds, fabric, light or the camera itself, and generates the frames that follow.

Because your image fixes the look of the opening frame, the result stays close to your photo. That makes image to video ideal for product shots, portraits, travel photos, artwork, AI images you made in another tool and thumbnails you want to turn into motion.

What you can animate

Portraits. A gentle smile, a turn of the head, wind in the hair or blinking eyes.

Landscapes and travel photos. Drifting clouds, flowing water, moving light and a slow push in.

Products. A slow orbit, light sweeping across the surface or floating particles for an ad.

Art and illustrations. Add life to a painting or an anime frame. Choose a matching style such as Anime, Watercolour or Oil painting to keep the look consistent.

Use photos you own or have permission to use, and do not animate real people in misleading or harmful ways. See our Content Policy.

Image to video vs text to video

Text to video gives the model complete freedom: it designs the characters, the place and the light from your words. Image to video starts from your picture, so you control the composition, colours and subject exactly, and the AI only adds motion.

Use image to video when the look matters more than surprise, for example a specific product, a character you already designed, a family photo or a brand visual. Use text to video when you want to explore ideas quickly. Many creators combine both: generate a still image they love in an image tool, then bring it to life here.

Shape matters too. Your picture's own proportions decide the frame, so crop it to 9:16 first if you want a vertical video for Reels or Shorts, or to 16:9 for YouTube.

Expect the first second to look almost exactly like your photo, with the motion growing from there. If a result moves too much, try again with a calmer prompt such as a slow push in.

  4. Tap Generate, then save the result as soon as it is ready.

Example prompts to copy

Motion prompts for image to video should describe movement, not the scene: the picture already shows the scene.

Slow cinematic push in, gentle wind moves the hair and clothes, soft natural light

Clouds drift across the sky, water ripples, warm sunlight slowly shifts across the scene

The subject turns toward the camera and smiles, shallow depth of field

Smooth 180 degree orbit around the product, light sweeping across the surface, dark studio background

Tips for better photo animation

  • Start with a sharp, well-lit image. The video inherits the quality of the first frame.
  • Ask for one or two motions, not ten. Subtle motion usually looks the most real.
  • Match the style to your picture: a cartoon picture with the Cinematic style can look odd.
  • Leave the prompt empty if you are unsure. The AI will pick natural movement for you.
